genre: a racing sim unlike any you-ve seen before, for Win95. the landscape itself reacts to your presence in that strange world. game speed seems to be skewed toward your enemies. visually stunning. game is developing a cult following and offers a good, fun drive, but that-s all. no real purpose to the game, not that it has to v just get up and go!

Vangers seems appropriate for kids 10 and up; the storyline may have some resonance for adult fans of science-fiction writers like Rudy Drucker, K. W. Jeter, and David Drake. The skill level required is very slight, a plus for gamers more interested in exploring alien worlds than the limits of sensory-motor skills. The game brings to the screen a well-balanced combination of story, imagery and sound that may not be cutting-edge, but is entertaining nonetheless.

Verdict: The Russian developers of Vangers have created a totally unique game. There really is nothing like it. Anybody with an attention span of less than a week would be advised to walk away, but if you persevere, Vangers will provide a gaming experience that's unlike any other.

"Vangers is a unique auto-combat game, but it's text-intensive back story sometimes suffocates the fun. Bottom line: Vangers isn't a bad game -- if you don't mind reading for a few hours between stages."

Recommendations
If the road to hell is paved with good intentions, then the path to digital oblivion must take shape in a similar manner. The ambition of this game's developers is obvious and to some extent, even admirable. But Vangers is a game that tries to do too much--and ends up doing very little. As a driving game the action is too loosely focused and generally unsatisfying. As an adventure, the game falls short because the missions/quests that you must complete are too mundane and repetitive. Vangers might have been a great game had the same energy invested in creating its atmosphere been spent on its missions. A scripted set of missions involving other NPC vangers based around an easy-to-follow plot would have been much more effective. True, this would have made the game much more linear, but what good is an open-ended universe if the player can't be bothered to even care about middle, let alone the end. I commend the developers for a good effort and some innovative ideas, but their poor execution makes Vangers hard to recommend.

The demo is huge, but it contains a complete Vangers world, which should provide hours of fun exploration. In addition, you'll spend plenty of time just trying to figure out the wacky lingo used by the Vangers characters. Vangers isn't a game; it's an experience, and I couldn't fully describe it in an article twice this long. Download it and immerse yourself -- you'll get so absorbed you won't even notice that this column has gone away.
